In consultation with the French Air Quality Monitoring Associations (AASQA), CERI EE is responsible for proposing and qualifying the measurement methods to be deployed, defining protocols, assessing data quality and managing the MERA observatory, which is part of the French regulatory air quality monitoring system.Site web :http://www.imt-nord-europe.frPoste et missionsSCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND AND POST-DOCTORAL ASSIGNMENTS:The impact of car traffic on the environment (tire and brake abrasion, exhaust emissions) induces significant emissions of iron-rich, highly magnetic particles and other potentially toxic heavy metals. Magnetic measurements are effective for determining the spatial distribution of pollution, as well as for identifying the various anthropogenic sources of heavy metal pollution. In Paris, urban trees offer an interesting alternative, complementing the reference air quality monitoring stations, as passive bio-collectors (plane tree bark). Exposed throughout the year to urban dust, they can record air quality signals locally and at a density that is often high on the same traffic axis. The aim of the CARNOT CARINGS NanoTracs project "Tracing fine airborne particles using passive bio-collectors: the link between urban environmental exposure and impact on human health" is to be able to correlate a particulate pollution level at a specific location in the city with a potential health risk. Among the methods for characterizing a potential health risk, the measurement of the oxidizing potential (OP) of atmospheric particles seems promising, and is the subject of much ongoing research. Its aim is to characterize the oxidative reactivity of particles, and thereby indicate any health impact linked to oxidative stress. Its application to particles collected by passive bio-collectors and to airborne particles requires original experimental developments. Ultimately, these developments could complement air quality monitoring methods and help prevent exposure to atmospheric pollution. The proposed study is of a multidisciplinary nature, at the interface between chemistry and biology. In liaison with the CERI EE functional manager, the candidate will be responsible for:Development/optimization and experimental implementation of oxidizing potential (OP) measurement on particles collected from tree bark or by on-line measurements. Define and validate a protocol for extracting, storing and analyzing oxidizing species using different OP techniques (e.g. AA, DTT). Link these PO measurements with physicochemical analyses and compare them with toxicological analyses performed on lung cells. Interface with the multidisciplinary teams of the CARNOT CARINGS NanoTracs project (ENS Mines Paris and Ecole des Mines St. Etienne). The candidate will also help supervise the physicochemical analyses of the PhD student already recruited on the project.Contribute to the statistical exploitation of OP measurement data, physicochemical analyses and associated metadata.Contribute to the scientific valorization of data from the CARNOT program in the form of articles in peer-reviewed journals and oral communications at conferences in the field. It will also be necessary to communicate the results and ensure the transfer of skills in the methods developed.Mobilité géographique : NationaleTélétravail : OccasionnelPrise de fonction : 01/09/2024ProfilCANDIDATE PROFILE: (PREREQUISITES/ DIPLOMA) The candidate must hold a PhD in analytical and/or environmental chemistry. PhD Development, optimization, and advanced control of multi-energy production and storage systems integrating innovative and intelligent hybrid solar pannels
ABG, DOUAI, Les Hauts de
Description du sujetThe candidate will join:The thematic axis "Energy, Fluids, and Transfers" (EFT) of the CERI Energy Environment, where research is conducted in the fields of optimizing thermofluidic components, energy systems, and processes for decarbonization purposes. Applications range from highly efficient heat exchangers and coolers for electric vehicle batteries to complex solar systems such as innovative concentrated solar power plants or self-piloted photovoltaic/thermal panels. The McLEOD axis of the CERI Digital Sciences, focusing on the modeling and control of complex systems. These systems typically consist of a large number of interacting entities, potentially distributed physically, and whose variability in behavior makes it difficult to observe and predict global dynamics over time. Scientific context and project descriptionFor several years, the consequences of climate change have been manifesting extremely across the world, leading several governments to commit to reducing CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently, there has been significant investment in renewable electricity and thermal production sources. Global photovoltaic production has increased from 32 TWh in 2010 to 1322 TWh in 2022, with prices decreasing by a factor of 10 over the period. During the same period, the number of solar thermal installations worldwide has doubled. However, in Europe, heating and cooling production represent 50% of the total energy demand, yet only 13% of this energy is decarbonized. Therefore, there is still a need to increase the production of decarbonized electrical and thermal energy while minimizing land use. Furthermore, the carbon footprint of the manufacturing industry, construction, and building sector accounts for 19% of global CO2 emissions and 13% in France. Moreover, the industry represents 30% of heat demand in France.Among the existing technical solutions for combined heat (both low and high temperature) and electricity production, photovoltaic-thermal hybrid panels (PV/T) offer very promising possibilities. PV/T panels provide multiple sources of decarbonized energy in a small space and can use various fluids to transport heat. Under nominal operating conditions, the electrical performance of PV/T panels is excellent. However, it degrades proportionally with the increase in photovoltaic cell temperature. Efficient control of these hybrid panels, particularly the flow rate control within the panel or the implementation of active heat transfer enhancement methods, is necessary albeit very delicate. Thus, efficient control of PV/T panels allowing regulation of cooling, delivered thermal power, and efficiency based on various constraints and objectives presents interesting scientific challenges. Furthermore, this renewable energy production solution is both decentralized and inherently intermittent. The widespread deployment of this technology can have a significant impact on both electrical and thermal networks, necessitating storage mechanisms at different time horizons and a production control strategy. Ultimately, the integration into the system and the scaling of this solution must also be considered and optimized. The proposed research project aims to address numerous scientific, technological, and economic challenges related to the intermittency of renewable energy sources (solar) and the high variability of uses. Currently available thermal equipment (solar panels, energy recovery systems) often have low efficiencies, and their sizing does not take into account potential couplings and variability of energy sources and/or uses. In order to be effectively managed based on all these difficult-to-control operating parameters, we must consider the association of thermal equipment with associated intelligence, resulting in a sensor with autonomy capabilities, as well as interaction with its environment. The resulting scientific questions are as follows:How to dynamically model an array of innovative PVT (Photovoltaic-Thermal) sensors and associated components, while integrating the thermal and electrical inertias of the system? How to control a multi-energy PVT array and optimally meet the needs of local and national networks while achieving the highest energy efficiency?ActivitiesConduct a preliminary bibliographic study (PVT systems, multi-energy solar fields).Perform an energy static study to select preferred integration concepts (heat pump, storage system, etc.).Conduct experimental/numerical thermo-hydraulic characterization of an innovative PV/T system with variable geometry vortex generators.Develop dynamic models of the entire system (PV/T array, storage, etc.).Develop a model suitable for control and advanced controller synthesis (e.g., predictive control, stochastic predictive control, data-driven predictive control).Perform dynamic simulations of the entire system with optimization of energy production, storage, and distribution based on different scenarios derived from real-world use cases.Showcase the work by participating in international conferences and writing scientific publications in international journals.Prise de fonction : 01/10/2024Nature du financementContrat doctoralPrécisions sur le financementPrésentation établissement et labo d'accueilIMT NORD EUROPEUnities: CERI Energy Environnent, CERI Digital Sciences, IMT Nord EuropeDirection: Head of CERI Energy Environment / CERI Digital SciencesNature of employment: PhD, Fixed term Job, 36 monthsLocation: Douai, France Presentation of the establishment Under the auspices of the Ministry of Economy, Finance, and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, and as part of the Institut Mines Télécom (IMT) network, IMT Nord Europe has three main missions: to train responsible engineers capable of addressing the major challenges of the 21st century, to conduct research leading to high-value innovations, and to support regional development by fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.
